Prophets, Sentinels, and the Future: Windpower on the Coast

Through my work at the Island Institute, I became involved with the creation of a 4.5 megawatt wind farm on Vinalhaven Island, out in the middle of Penobscot Bay in midcoast Maine. It was an audacious effort on the part of a handful of islanders who were determined to beat down the exorbitantly high price of electricity on their offshore home. I will spare you any further details, but suffice it to say, the project was a great success and the three beautiful turbines are, as I write this, out there churning away in the ever colder and more relentless winds of approaching winter.
