A Boatyard Dog’s Dreams Come True in Rockland

Here’s a challenge: The next time your dog is stretched out for a catnap in a cool spot, take a good, long look at her. You might notice the light whimper, the muzzle twitch, the jerking feet that are indicative of a doggy dream. Think your pup is enjoying a virtual squirrel, cat, or tennis ball chase? You might be surprised. Your dog might actually be dreaming about wowing the crowds as a competitor in the Annual World Championship Boatyard Dog® Trials, held annually during the second weekend in August at the Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors Show in Rockland.

Every year (the 2013 event will be held on August 11) a few pre-selected pooches (and their people) have the honor of splashing, dancing, fetching, and swimming for the judges at this fun event. In the spirit of truly amateur, silly sportsmanship there are but three requirements: climbing in and out of a tippy boat, presenting a freestyle act of your own devising, and getting soaked (either dog or handler). The rules are simple, but the true challenge is being creative, quirky, and festive enough to capture the laughs and smiles of both judges and crowd.

If you’re interested in being your dog’s hero (and what dog owner isn’t?), you need to submit your entry for the Boatyard Dog® Trials right away, as the event is fast approaching. The winner will get their pup’s name on the cherished Pup Cup and be featured in the Boatyard Dog column of Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors magazine.
