Cleveland Ledge Race: A Classic Race Revival

During the late 1940s and 1950s, the Herreshoff 12 classes of Buzzards Bay wanted to build more competition between the local yacht clubs and began a yearly race near the Cleveland Ledge Light. At that time, the lighthouse was a recent edition to Buzzards Bay and stood equidistant between the yacht clubs. For this reason, the Cleveland Ledge Light made a perfect sailing venue.

Over the decades the race disappeared but, with renewed interest, the race is getting a new start. The Beverly Yacht Club, Quissett Yacht Club, and Buzzards Yacht Club are working together to revive the race and hope to make it a yearly event again. The 2013 event is scheduled for Sunday, July 21. The fleets will meet in the vicinity of Cleveland Ledge Light to race one another, and will then race in the individual clubs back to their own home port. Trophies will be awarded at the H Class National Regatta in August 2013.
