Sneak Peek: Check Out Volvo Ocean Race Yachts in Newport

The 2014-15 Volvo Ocean Race isn’t officially arriving in Newport until May 2015, but sailing fans in New England won’t have to wait that long to see these hotshot sailors and their incredible yachts. Team SCA, an all-women entry into the race, is using a transatlantic crossing to train for the round-the-world race, and they’re making Newport their landfall. They are due to arrive at Newport Shipyard between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7.

The voyage from Lanzarote, in the Canary Islands, has been a wild one, but luckily the team has been recording it and sent in this excellent video compilation even before they hit Narragansett Bay. Judging by the conditions shown here, this is one tough group of female sailors!

Team SCA will only be in Newport briefly, after which they’ll head back across the Atlantic to a waypoint off Lisbon — essentially a dry run of the seventh leg of the race, which begins in October. They won’t be the only VOR65 sailing yacht to visit Newport this spring, as Team Alvimedica (the American entry to the race), Team Dongfeng, and Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing are all reported to be planning visits to the City by the Sea.
