Newport-based Team Retires from Leg 1 of Volvo Race

The ocean racing yacht Mar Mostro, sponsored by PUMA and BERG Propulsion and led by Newport native Ken Read, was dismasted November 21 in the South Atlantic while racing from Spain to Cape Town, South Africa. No one was injured in the incident, but the team has been forced to retire from the first leg of the nine-leg round-the-world race. The boat is now making its way toward the island of Tristan da Cunha, about 700 miles away, under power and a jury-rigged sail.

Of the six boats that started the race on November 5 in Alicante, Spain, half have now dropped out of the first leg. All have indicated that they will be ready to start the next leg, from Cape Town to Abu Dhabi, on December 11.
