Save the Date, Pencil us in, Chart a Course — however you want to phrase it, the point is the Second Annual Penobscot Bay Rendezvous is scheduled for August 16-19, 2012. While the detailed schedule has not officially been nailed down, events will take place in Camden, Rockland, and Thomaston, Maine, with on-the-water events for the sail and power fleet running from Rockland to Camden.
Presented by Wayfarer Marine and Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding, last year’s inaugural event was just what the organizers, participants, and sponsors hoped for: great weather for racing and power boat events, a fantastic mix of sail and power boats, and three nights of fabulous parties.
The 2012 event will adhere to the same format of three days of on-the-water events for the fleet of power and sailboats. The power and motor yachts will take off on a photo pursuit on Friday and Saturday. This is not a race, rather each powerboat will be given a list of well-known Penobscot Bay landmarks or features to photograph. The event will combine the navigation skills and creativity of our power fleet. The images will be shown each night. A panel of professional photographers and other distinguished Judges will judge the work and awards will be presented to the top three photographers at the awards ceremony on Sunday.
What powerboat event would be complete without a Poker Run? Cards will be left at various local establishments and can be collected throughout the weekend. Hands will be dealt on Sunday before the Awards Ceremony.
Sailboat racing will be on a variety courses set in Penobscot Bay. Ted Smith, the regatta’s Primary Race Officer, will officiate the weekend’s on-the-water activities. Three days’ worth of fun and scenic courses and exciting and competitive racing will be offered. There will be a class and level of intensity to fit every sailor. With PHRF Racing Divisions, Cruising Division, DH/SH Division, as well as Multihull and One Design Divisions being offered. Bucket Rules and Jim Teeters Bucket Ratings will apply for the super yacht division. Local one-design classes are encouraged to sign-up; a three-boat fleet will qualify for their own start. This is a great regatta to enter if you have never raced before, as the race committee takes great care in assigning boats to the correct division.
The committee will be finalizing the party details over the next couple of months. The coveted Yellow Jerseys will be handed out each evening to the day’s winning skippers. Yellow Jerseys must be worn during the following day’s competition. Penalties will be assessed if the skipper does not abide the dress code!
Last year’s event venues included the welcoming dinner at Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding in Thomaston. Fireworks over the St. George River capped off that night. Friday evening guests gathered at the Camden Yacht Club for a sumptuous cocktail reception hosted by Cellardoor Winery and Megunticook Market. Saturday night’s fete at Wayfarer Marine was sponsored by Stephens Waring Yacht Design and started out with cocktails aboard their new launch Isobel, followed by a surf and turf dinner. After dinner, guests danced the night away to the seven-piece dance band Nightlife.

Penobscot Bay Rendezvous is Maine’s newest sailing and power event, presented by Wayfarer Marine and Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding. Superyachts to classics to performance racers, picnic boats and lobster yachts are invited to enter. The Penobscot Bay Rendezvous is a celebration of boating and boatbuilding. Featuring daily races for sailboats and a Poker Run and Photo Pursuit events for powerboats, the participants will have access to both Wayfarer Marine and Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding world-renowned boatyards and will be hosted each night at a different exclusive venue.
