Maine Crews Prepare for Antigua Classic Regatta

With the arrival of spring comes the sound of power sanders and Travelifts along the Maine coast, but eight of the state’s top boatbuilders and boatyards are gearing up not only for the start of their own boating season, but also for one of the premier classic yacht regattas to take place on this side of the Atlantic. The Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta will be held April 19-24 and brings together some of the most stunning yachts anywhere in the world for a bit of racing in gorgeous (and warm!) Caribbean waters.

In conjunction with the event, eight Maine boatbuilders and boatyards — Portland Yacht Services, Hodgdon Yachts, Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding Co., Rockport Marine, Wayfarer Marine, Front Street Shipyard, Brooklin Boatyard, and The Hinckley Company— are joining together, along with Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors, to sponsor what has become known in the Caribbean as the party of the spring season in the Caribbean. Along with plenty of libations, Maine lobster, and some live music, the Sail Maine Party on Sunday, April 22, will be a chance for these top-quality Maine companies to show the classic yacht crews and their owners what Maine has to offer.

Here is a sampling of the caliber of classic yachts being built and serviced by these eight fine boatyards. If you’re fortunate enough to find yourself in Antigua this month, keep your eye out for them. If not, don’t worry — many of them will hopefully be sailing on the coast of Maine this summer!
