A Racer’s Life: Newport’s Kenny Read Back at the Helm

You might think that after 39,000 miles of racing a yacht around the world’s roughest oceans, you’d get a little time off. Not so for Newport‘s Kenny Read, skipper of Mar Mostro, the Puma- and BERG Propulsion-sponsored entry in the 2011-12 Volvo Ocean Race. Despite dismasting in the race’s first leg, Read led his crew to a third-place finish, barely missing a repeat of his 2008-2009 second-place spot on the podium during the race’s final leg.

Only a couple of weeks after the race’s conclusion in Galway, Ireland, Read was back at the helm of his previous Volvo Ocean 70, Il Mostro, this week in the Race to Mackinac, a 289-mile race across Lake Michigan. Read apparently hadn’t lost his touch on the old boat, taking line honors in the race and finishing a full hour ahead of the nearest competitor.
