Have you sailed around any of the seabird nesting islands this summer for a glimpse of the famous Atlantic puffin? Time is of essence, do not delay! We are seeing signs that summer is over for our nesting birds and the Refuge has started breaking down intern camps on Metinic and Pond islands.
The puffins will soon start heading back out to see, along with many of the other species that came to “land” to nest, leaving you to only pine for their presence until next summer. Up at Machias Seal Island folks are starting to see migrating songbirds and shorebirds heading south for the winter. Keep an eye out for those rare birds and let us know what you find out there on the water. Remember that after August 31 you may land on the seabird nesting islands if you so desire.
