Newport Aquarium Damaged by Hurricane Sandy

As every Rhode Islander now knows, Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc on our coastal communities – especially those along the southern shores of Rhode Island from Westerly to Little Compton. The effects of this storm are far reaching and will be long felt.

Aquidneck Island was no exception. While we were fortunate to escape the full wrath of Sandy at the Bay Center in Providence, our aquarium in Newport was not so lucky. Here are a few photos of the damage; for a full online photo album, click here.

At this point, it is uncertain when we will re-open; however, our staff did an amazing job in the immediate aftermath of the storm. All of our animals survived and found new homes!

We will continue to keep you posted on our aquarium planning. Until then, be safe in your travels as storm cleanup continues across the state.
