Coastal Flooding Predictions for October 2023
NOAA is predicting extreme tides at the end of October in many locations around the country, especially the eastern seaboard. While only Fort Pulaski, GA is predicted to “likely” flood this month, there are many harbors where high tide flooding is possible, and several locations in Virginia and Texas are expected to see likelihood of flooding for the ENTIRE month! The Pacific states will also see potential high-tide flooding this October, although they were likely spared in September. NOAA does not seem to have any predictions for Alaska at this point.
It is important to note that these predictions do not account for real-time weather conditions. Severe weather may cause flooding outside of dates predicted. To see water levels in real-time and track storms, visit NOAA’s Coastal Inundation Dashboard.
About these Predictions: “These flooding likelihoods are derived from a probabilistic model that incorporates tide predictions, sea level rise trends, and seasonal changes in coastal sea level to predict the potential that a higher than normal high tide may exceed established National Ocean Service flood thresholds. During these periods, high tide flooding may occur in flood-prone areas.” NOAA
