High Surf Advisory issued September 16 at 10:07AM AKDT until September 18 at 10:00AM AKDT by NWS Anchorage AK
The National Weather Service in Anchorage has issued a High Surf
Advisory, which is in effect from 10 PM Tuesday to 10 AM AKDT
Wednesday.
* LOCATION...Primarily for the southern Bristol Bay coastline from
the mouth of the Kvichak River to Port Heiden, including the
communities of Naknek, Egegik, and Pilot Point. High surf is
possible but less likely from the mouth of the Kvichak River
west to Cape Newenham.
* WINDS AND WAVES...Southwesterly winds of 30 to 40 mph are
expected, with gusts as high as 50 to 65 mph. Waves up to 10
feet breaking on the shoreline.
* TIMING...Strong southwesterly winds peak between about 10pm
Tuesday and 6am Wednesday, around the same time as high tide.
The worst conditions will occur around or shortly after
midnight, then improve through the early morning hours on
Wednesday.
* IMPACTS...Winds and waves are forecast to bring about a 4 to 6
ft surge on top of the high tide, which may inundate or move
property along the shoreline. Coastal erosion during high tide
is likely.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...While the strongest winds are expected for
the southern Bristol Bay coastline, a long duration of south to
southwesterly winds from Tuesday morning through evening could
also lead to high surf along the northern Bristol Bay coastline,
including the communities of Dillingham and Togiak.
