The waterway joins Little River at Calabash River extends northeastward from Little River just north of the waterway cutoff and southward to connect the waterway with Little River Inlet. In 2008, the controlling depth was 2.9 feet to the town of Calabash, NC, 0.6 mile Calabash, NC, 0.6 mile above the entrance. The channel is marked by lights and daybeacons.
The mean range of tide at Little River is about 5 feet.
