Monthly High Tide Flooding Outlook – May 2025

The western- and eastern-most edges of the U.S. will be at greatest risk of flooding in May, with high water events likely only on the big island of Hawaii and in Boston, Massachusetts, and Bar Harbor, Maine. Flooding is predicted in those locations during the full moon, on May 12, and the new moon, on May 26 in Bar Harbor and Boston, and on May 27 in Hawaii. Flooding is possible (defined by NOAA as less than a 50 percent chance) in more than two dozen harbors from coast to coast this month. Higher than normal high tides (and, of course, lower than normal low tides) occur around the perigean spring tide, when the moon is new and closer to Earth.

Note that while NOAA only makes these flooding predictions for harbors with National Ocean Service water level stations, other locations along the coast may experience similar high-water events during these time periods. Real-time weather conditions, including wind direction and storm surge, may also increase the potential for flooding.
