Coastal Flooding Predictions for April 2024
April’s highest tides will happen at the end of the 2nd week of the month, starting as early as April 7 in some places, and heading back to normal after the 11th or 12th. There are some location-specific outliers we’re highlighting here, with details for all locations on which NOAA has provided data further down the page:
- Bar Harbor, ME (our home state!) is the ONLY harbor in the country where NOAA is predicting “likely” high tide flooding this month. This is forecast to happen on April 10 and 11.
- Eagle Point in Galveston Bay, TX is expected to see flooding for the entire month of April, EXCEPT April 7 and April 20.
- Morgans Point/Barbours Cut, Galveston, TX is not predicted to have high tide flooding during the same period as most of the other locations, instead NOAA is saying they may see flooding at the end of the month, starting April 25 and ending on April 30.
- Fernandina Beach, FL is the only location in Florida predicted to see flooding this month, and it hasn’t been on this list for several months.
- Bay St. Louis, MS has not been predicted to have high tide flooding for quite a few months (although they certainly could have with the weather!) but in April NOAA predicts they will see two periods of high tide flooding: April 11-13, and 26-30.
- California and Hawaii look like they might be spared from high tide flooding this month! That said, weather and tide alignment can always cause flooding, and no prediction is 100% perfect (although we think NOAA does a pretty awesome job).
QUICK LINKS to possible flood days by region: Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, Gulf Coast, Pacific Coast
About these Predictions: “These flooding likelihoods are derived from a probabilistic model that incorporates tide predictions, sea level rise trends, and seasonal changes in coastal sea level to predict the potential that a higher than normal high tide may exceed established National Ocean Service flood thresholds. During these periods, high tide flooding may occur in flood-prone areas.” NOAA
