Three main rivers enter St. Catherines Sound. Bear River and North Newport River, which form a portion of the Intracoastal Waterway, flow into the sound from the northwestward and southwestward, respectively.
Medway River enters the sound from the westward. In 1983, there was a reported controlling depth of 10 feet to Sunbury, a small settlement on the western shore 7 miles above the mouth of Medway River.
