Stopping By Beals Island’s Working Waterfront

3/15/2012 - The term working waterfront means many things to many different people, but to me, the concept of a working waterfront must center on the ability for local fisherman to use the waterfront land that is available to them in any way possible as to maximize their profit and efficiency. Beals… SEE MORE

Every Day, Any Weather: The Isle Au Haut Mail Boat

3/9/2012 - Getting to Isle Au Haut is a true Maine coast experience. You have to cross the Eggemoggin Reach, drive over two bridges and two causeways, and hop two islands. All this before you even get to the mail boat, a 46-foot Jarvis Newman design that was made for harsh weather… SEE MORE

In the Lee of Acadia: Welcome to Great Cranberry Island

1/24/2012 - Great Cranberry Island, a lovely oasis of sloping meadows, protected inlets, and rocky shores, is truly a place where you can escape the hustle and bustle of the outside world. Sitting just two miles off Mount Desert Island, GCI, as the locals call it, is the largest of the Cranberry… SEE MORE

Bustling in the summertime, Castine's village center is a decidedly quieter place in the off-season.

The Quiet Season Comes to Castine

1/12/2012 - Castine is one of those Maine towns that is so stunning you may find your jaw literally drop. Quiet streets filled with well-preserved homes, most of them at least a couple of centuries old, slope gracefully down to the water, where a deepwater port of great historic significance sits at… SEE MORE

Coastal Travel

1/9/2012 - Talk about 360-degree water views. This Airstream travel trailer, spotted by Bentley Collins in his Sabre 36 last summer on Islesboro Island, Maine, may be the ultimate in seaside getaways. Lest the parking brake slip and send the trailer into Penobscot Bay, its wise owner has actually removed the wheels… SEE MORE

Happy Holidays from the USHarbors Crew

12/23/2011 - The holidays are a special time to slow down and reflect on what's important. For us, making the most of our lives on the coast and sharing the excitement of our experiences on the water with you is a special treat. We know that sometimes we can all get so… SEE MORE

Waking up in Pulpit Harbor is an experience not to be missed by any boater.

Best of the Best: An Overnight in Pulpit Harbor

12/21/2011 - It’s not without some local bias that I boast of Penobscot Bay as a world-class cruising area. And within these spectacularly varied sailing grounds the pinnacle, I would have to say, is Pulpit Harbor. As I’ve been lucky enough to sail much of our magnificent East Coast from the Canadian… SEE MORE

Enjoying the Passing of Time and Tide in Gilkey Harbor

12/13/2011 - Rolling toward Gilkey Harbor in the company of following swells kicked up by the stiff southwesterly breeze, we intercepted a fleet of sleek Dark Harbor 20s. The classic one-design racers were slicing toward the windward mark just off Minot Ledge that was covered in sunbathing seals (a familiar sight on… SEE MORE

The view under a schooner's bow, as a lobsterboat unloads its traps.

Final November Row of the Season

11/21/2011 - Last week I had the urge to take one final row on my home harbor of Rockport, Maine. The summerlike afternoon, in November, made it hard to resist. Rowing up the placid Goose River at dead low tide felt like floating in the bottom of a granite block-lined crevasse. You… SEE MORE

Exploring the Stark Beauty Of Eastport

10/31/2011 - Driving down Route 190, I quickly pulled off to the side and watched in amazement as a large group of ominous looking clouds rolled over the vast expanse of Passamaquoddy Bay. A few silvery rays of sunshine peeked through the clouds, illuminating the distant shores of Deer Island and New… SEE MORE
