Meet the Boys from Bass Harbor and Bernard

12/10/2011

His name is Dell, and he has been fishing the waters of downeast Maine for some thirty years now.  He operates out of F.W. Thurston’s lobster pound in the small and salty fishing village of Bernard, which sits tucked away on the west side of Bass Harbor, in the southwest… SEE MORE

Northeast Harbor, a Delightful Basecamp for Exploring Acadia

12/9/2011

Northeast Harbor is one of an overflowing handful of iconic sailing destinations on the coast of Maine. It’s also one of the few harbors along the Maine coast where the visiting sailor is reliant upon finding a mooring or dock space to spend the night. That, on occasion, can be… SEE MORE

12/9/2011

"Suave mari magno, turbantibus aequora ventis E terra magnum alterius spectare laborem." OK, scholars. What was this great Roman poet saying back in the first century B.C., and how is it relevant to our lives on the coast? SEE MORE

Quiet, Solitary Scenes from the Schoodic Peninsula

12/6/2011

The Schoodic section of Acadia National Park is an absolute gem of a place. The only mainland acreage in the park, the Schoodic peninsula juts out into the rough Atlantic ocean, allowing for brilliant and harsh displays of the ocean's considerable wrath. On a clear and crisp December day, when… SEE MORE

Edgartown, a Versatile Destination on Martha's Vineyard

12/5/2011

On each new visit to Edgartown Harbor, I cut a little farther inside Bell No. 2. On our first visit years ago, with our two excited young kids onboard, I’d prudently steered safely to seaward before rounding Bell No. 2 and into the harbor. Coming into a now-familiar Edgartown Harbor… SEE MORE

More Work, More Fishing as Winter Nears in Bunkers Harbor

12/3/2011

Bunkers Harbor, just on the western side of Prospect Harbor, is a small place, the kind of remote fishing outpost that much of the coast of Maine is known for. There are a few old wharves clustered around the small inlet of water that constitutes the harbor proper. The narrow… SEE MORE

Boston Fish Pier As it Was

12/2/2011

Long before the Big Dig and the Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge came to Boston, the Beantown waterfront was a bustling place for fishermen and others who worked the sea. These images from the Atlantic Fisherman collection at the Penobscot Marine Museum give a taste of Boston's working… SEE MORE
