Weatherly: Preserving a Piece of Maritime History

We met George Hill at the party following the 2009 Opera House Cup, on Nantucket. He told us the story of how he found Weatherly in disrepair in Seattle. What it took to sail her back to Newport and restore the America’s Cup winner to her former glory was a great story of youthful adventure and the passion for sailing. We decided we needed to take a trip to Newport to get the story on film.

The 12-meter Weatherly had beaten Gretel, the first of the Aussies’ challengers of the Americas Cup, in 1962. Listen to George’s story and you begin to see the passion involved in preserving these pieces of American marine history.

This excerpt from our latest film “Wood/Sails/Dreams” explores the resurgence of wooden boats and traditional wooden boat building that began in the 1970s. We hope to bring “Wood/Sails/Dreams” to the big screen in time for the 40th running of the Opera House Cup, on August 19, 2012.
