Parties, Movies, and Sailing: Cup Week Continues

The America’s Cup World Series is kicking into high gear in Newport, with more racing, more presentations, and more parties taking place every day. For race crews, the days leading up to Thursday’s first championship race are proving critical as the teams learn learn to understand the local weather conditions and the impact that Newport’s tides can have on their performance. For spectators, the practices have shown them how close they can get to the action in Newport and where they’ll find the best vantage point for watching the “real” races later in the week and this weekend.

But not all the activity in Newport is happening on Narragansett Bay. At the Exploration Zone in Fort Adams, speakers are giving presentations on everything from what an ice-free arctic might look like to the fish populations in the bay and how to operate a remote underwater vehicle when cleaning up the seabed. (Please say hi to our friends at the Rozalia Project!)

On Tuesday, June 26, at 6:30 p.m. there will be a special one-time screening of “07.07.07 – Amorita’s Lucky Day”, a brand-new film about the sinking and subsequent rebuilding of Amorita. Proceeds from this screening will benefit Sail Newport, and our advice is to get your tickets as early as you can — this one is sure to sell out!

The focus on the actual racing will hit a fever pitch from June 28-July 1, when the winner of the entire 2011-12 America’s Cup World Series will be crowned. Just four points separate the leader from the rest of the pack, so the regatta being staged in Newport will truly determine the champion of this signature event. Even the major TV networks have finally taken notice of what’s happening on Narragansett Bay this year, with NBC covering the final events on Sunday, July 1, beginning at 2:30 p.m EST.
