Modern to Classic: Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors Show

The tenth annual Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors Show was in full swing on Saturday, August 11, as many fogbound boaters took advantage of their time off the water to sample the latest — and also some of the oldest — boats and coastal products. This show always offers plenty of surprises for visitors, but without a doubt one of the most exciting exhibits is practically the first thing that people see upon entering Harbor Park in Rockland — SpeedDream, the 27-foot carbon fiber prototype built by Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding Co. and soon to take a run at some monohull sailing records. This cutting-edge design must be seen to be believed (we can’t wait for the sea trials!).

Just a few steps away, a classic Herreshoff sloop recently built by Artisan Boatworks was also attracting plenty of attention, as were the dozens of gorgeous fiberglass cruisers and center-console powerboats lined up along the seawall. Between those yachts and the larger vessels tied up to the docks off the public landing, a few bold Stand-Up Paddleboarders were practicing their strokes in preparation for the afternoon’s SUP-jousting competition — proof that this show is, indeed, all about having fun. (The Boatyard Dog competition on Sunday morning is another hilarious highlight.)

The show will be open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 10-4 p.m. Sunday. For more information and to purchase tickets, click here.
