Legendary Racing Yacht Wild Oats XI Reborn as Palm Beach XI for Sydney to Hobart

The transformation of one of ocean racing’s most successful vessels offers insights into how advanced marine technology developed for competition can translate to recreational yacht design and harbor operations. Mark Richards’ decision to rebrand and extensively refit the record-setting Wild Oats XI demonstrates the growing intersection between high-performance racing programs and luxury yacht manufacturing—a trend with implications for marina infrastructure and service capabilities.

According to an article by Arnie Hammerman at Best4Boats:

To prepare for the 2025 race, Palm Beach XI underwent a major refit that upgraded the 20-year-old yacht to modern standards and beyond. This collaborative effort is led by Mark Richards himself, drawing on his decades of ocean-racing experience and 40 years of innovative high-tech boat building. Richards brought in Juan Kouyoumdjian (Juan K Naval Architects), whose expertise in America’s Cup and Volvo Ocean Racing has turned out many winning designs. McConaghy Boats, who originally built the boat and is one of the world’s top composite race-yacht specialists, was part of the transformation team.

The Palm Beach XI retrofit includes one of the most high-tech appendage packages ever attempted on a racing yacht. The technical details along with illustrations can be found at the link below.

Richards, founder of Palm Beach Motor Yachts and CEO of GB Marine Group, raced the 100-foot Reichel-Pugh designed super-maxi in the 80th Rolex Sydney to Hobart race on December 26, 2025. The vessel has won nine line honors victories—more than any other boat in the race’s history.
