Sombrero Key is located in Hawk Channel in the Florida Reef amid the Middle Florida Keys. it is a coral reef southern of Vaca Key that is part of the Sombrero Key Sanctuary Preservation Area of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. When exploring the area long ago, the Spanish called the reef Cayo Sombrero as part of the reef could be seen above the water at low tide. The Sombrero Key Light was in use from 1858 to 2015.
