Boating, Fishing, and Travel Information for Portage, IN

Portage is still a heavily industrial city. While primarily dependent on the Steel Industry, the 1980s brought a decline in the steel industry. As a result, C.O.I.L (the Community Organization on Industrial Location) was formed. This organization promotes diversified industry in the area. They have had part in developing the Coca-Cola bottling plant and further development of the Port of Indiana. The largely industrial Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor also contains the Burns Waterway Small Boat Harbor, a 5,540-foot long canal, dredged to a depth of 6 feet, extending inland from Lake Michigan to south of U.S. Highway 12. It is located west of Burns Waterway Harbor. This boat harbor provides access to the inland Portage Marina.
